Michael Long, the editor of First Class Citizenship, recently interviewed Rachel Robinson, the widow of Jackie Robinson. In this audio clip from the interview, the two discuss the civil rights efforts of Jackie Robinson and his career on and off of the baseball field. Mrs. Robinson discusses Jackie Robinson’s political affiliations, his dealings with Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, and why he chose to support particular candidates—sometimes against her advice. The discussion provides first-hand insight into the mind and heart of a great American from the person who knew him best.
